Earlier on Saturday, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that he was willing to resign to make way for a new unity government after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his official residence when it was mobbed by protesters. "To ensure the continuation of the Government including the safety of all citizens I accept the best recommendation of the Party Leaders today, to make way for an All-Party Government. To facilitate this I will resign as Prime Minister," he wrote on Twitter.

👉As Sri Lanka reels under a political and economic crisis, thousands of people protesting against the government entered the official residence of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Saturday. In a viral video, some of them can be seen swimming in the pool at Rajapaksa's residence.
👉The protestors gathered at the President's official residence from across the country. They raided the bedroom, swimming pool, and the kitchen. Slogans like, "Gota go home", were heard. Gota is the shortened version of President Rajapaksa's first name.
👉The President was reportedly escorted to a safe place hours before the protestors broke into his official residence. He was moved to the Army headquarters following an intelligence report suggesting that the ongoing situation may become grim and uncontrollable.
👉Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe announced that he has agreed to resign. This happened after Lanka's Parliament leaders demanded from both Prime Minister and President step down after protesters stormed the President's residence.
👉The 22 million people of Sri Lanka have suffered for months from acute food and fuel shortages and inflation mainly caused by the chronic mismanagement of the country's finances.
